CHELSEA CULPRIT

Chelsea Culprit and Queer Thoughts, New York
The subject of the dynamic work of this Mexico City-based American artist is the body, specifically the art-historical baggage of the female nude and the costumes and contortions of strippers. Two raucously colored, wall-spanning paintings on paper repeat the motif of a bent figure grasping platform boots, rendered in a manner that calls to mind a seated Matisse. On adjacent walls, the wings of a pair of fabric-upholstered butterfly shapes are accessorized with a yellow belt and a fan of delicate chains—Matisse’s iconic cutouts updated to reflect women’s work, whether at the sewing machine or onstage at the club.
