Paper in Practice

Paper in Practice is a group exhibition featuring work by 17 artists, including: Jean‑Michel Basquiat, Brian Belott, Huma Bhabha, Ida Ekblad, Sheree Hovsepian, Rashid Johnson, Mimi Lauter, Yi-Hsuan Lin, Eric Mack, Mason Saltarrelli, Torey Thornton, Brad Troemel, Oscar Tuazon, Jonas Wood, Stanley Whitney, Rose Wylie, and Viola Yeşiltaç.

This exhibition presents work by artists who consider paper an important part of their practice, and whose use of paper is markedly diverse, yet also critical in relation to their individual output. These artists exalt the medium of paper as equivalent to any other medium. Consequently, the works in this exhibition are not studies, nor ancillary components of discovery or experimentation in preparation for another artwork; instead, they represent an acute choice of method.

For some of these artists, working on paper serves as an extension or a broadening of their practice – an art form they determined as the most effective medium to communicate their idea. In other cases, the artist’s use of paper is essential in varying their practice, contributing to a greater narrative. Regardless of the impetus, this exhibition aims to address conceptions of value, highlighting the significance of paper as a medium.
