Marco Barrera, George Herms, and Agathe Snow Eternal

Eternal is a three-person exhibition with new work by Marco Barrera and Agathe Snow, and historical pieces by George Herms, selected by Barrera and Snow.

An Ode to the found and the misplaced, the schlepped and the hunted. To all the materials: broken, forgotten, used, and reused, on a last leg, out of style and out of step. Once collected and cherished then sold or discarded. Material loses function, purpose, and its original role. But reduced to its color, shape, composition, and volume, what was dead is revived and reinvented. A bead threaded and added to the next as an exercise in non-function, in uselessness, is a thing of beauty, of truth, something loud and clear that fits – informing/enforcing form and reason.

This is an ode to the constant search for that inexplicable leftover. A treasure hunt on the streets, on the internet, in yard sales, in friends’ basements and attics. Resting until it speaks to you, whispers images, thoughts, past lives, past times. Beauty found in the damaged, the disfigured, the taken for granted. It speaks of humanity and this constant search for the next. Creation is everywhere and comes from need. Marco Barrera lives and works in New York, NY, and received his BFA from The Cooper Union in 2014. Recent group exhibitions include No Hope, No Fear, at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma, Rome, Italy; Fresh Cuts, at Eric Firestone Gallery, East Hampton, NY; When Did Intimacy Begin Width, Jeffrey Stark, New York, NY; and Marlborough Lights, at Marlborough Chelsea, New York, NY.

George Herms lives and works in Irvine, CA. His work has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY. Herms received three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts; a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in Sculpture; the Prix de Rome Fellowship in Sculpture from the American Academy in Rome; the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Award; and was a visiting scholar at the Getty Research Institute in 2005. His work is currently on view in Beat Generation, at the Centre Pompidou.

Agathe Snow lives and works in Long Island, NY. She has shown nationally at the New Museum, New York, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, and internationally at Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, Germany; Jeu de Paume, Paris, France; Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France; and Saatchi Gallery, London, UK. Snow’s work is included in the permanent collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; the Charles Saatchi Collection, London, UK; the Zabludowitz Collection; and in the Dikeou Collection, Denver, CO.
