Kon Trubkovich Vigil

Vigil is Kon Trubkovich’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. Prints of paused stills from the home video archive of a family friend are used as stage sets for experimentation in these new works that present a departure from his practice of the last 10 years.. Anonymous figures move through various scenes. Familiar objects suggest the normalcy of quotidian life, and yet an oddness in the movements of the figures point at something else playing out, concurrently. A nondescript car idles in a Moscow courtyard; a cat makes its way, slinking down the stairs; a child holds an ambiguous object.

In Curtain Call (2017), two sections of a striped window curtain flutter in the breeze. Partially obscured is a video still of a two-story building, a running vehicle, and a hunched figure, dissolving into a field of unbleached titanium white. As with the rest of the paintings, Curtain Call is a testimony – not only to the artist’s memory, but to his increasing comprehension of what may have actually taken place.
